Riku was born to a sickly mother and a father who adored her. His father's world revolved around her, and though she was sickly, he was happy to start a family with her. What he wasn't happy about was the toll the pregnancy took on her, and when she passed away he was devastated.
[break][break]
Riku had been three, and his memories of his mother were weak and hazy because of that. He remembered that she had been a loving and doting woman, and his father had been warm and caring while she had been alive. After her death, however, his father withdrew. He never hit Riku, never yelled at him, and was never outwardly cruel - but he was distant and disconnected, and there was no longer any warmth there.
[break][break]
He found his warmth and affection in his friendship with Sora. The two were inseparable growing up, to the point of practically being brothers. And then, when they were eight, Kairi came.
[break][break]
Riku never blamed Kairi, but her appearance changed the dynamic of their relationship. She became the 'object' that they fought over, and instead of being the inseparable duo they were an unbalanced trio. They were too young to be open and honest, too young to know what to do with their feelings, and an imaginary divide began to form. This divide, coupled by Riku's own natural burning desire to see more, led to the start of his fall into darkness.
[break][break]
When a voice came to tell him that there was a way off the world, Riku grabbed at it desperately, and it took him down a long and winding path to darkness. He met Malificent and fell under her spell, and he became utterly entwined in the darkness. His own insecurity prevented him from realizing that Sora hadn't been trying to run away without him or replace him, and by the time Riku realized he was mistaken, Xehanort had already taken over.
[break][break]
In order to make sure the door to the world of Heartless was shut, Riku stayed in the darkness with The King. And there he began a year-long journey to try first to purge himself of his darkness, and then to take advantage of it. In the end he found control, but the control came at the cost of his memories, and his physical appearance.
[break][break]
Riku hid himself from both Sora and Kairi, afraid they would hate him if they saw him in Xehanort's body. He did all he could to help Sora against the Organization though, and fought to protect Kairi when she was taken hostage. In the end, he was finally forced to face Sora as he was, and the brunet was able to see through to his heart below. It wasn't long from then before Ansem the Wise destroyed the growing Kingdom Hearts, and the power of the hearts restored Riku to his true form.
[break][break]
He fought alongside Sora and defeated Xemnas, and the worlds were safe. The waking worlds, at least. The two were informed of the sleeping worlds shortly after, and they embarked on their Mark of Mastery exam - save the sleeping worlds, and they would both become Keyblade Masters.
[break][break]
Riku never dove into his own dream. From the start he sensed something was wrong, and that part of him caused him to dive into Sora's subconscious. There he existed as a dream eater version of himself, and he protected Sora from the darkness that Xehanort had been trying to infect him with. Riku came face to face with his own darkness and overcame it, and in the process he saved Sora, became a Master, and prevented Xehanort's plan from succeeding.
[break][break]
Sora failed, but he continued to train to grow stronger. Riku did as well, and he helped both Sora and Kairi to train to become Keyblade Masters. And maybe, eventually, they would have been -
[break][break]
But Xehanort acted.
[break][break]
Riku is 19 now, and his world is far different. He believes he is a highschool dropout and the older brother to Xion. His friendship with Sora and Kairi both is strained, and protecting his little sister means more to him than staying in touch with them. Now he's living in Shibuya, working to support both himself and Xion in their small shared apartment.

Riku currently has no combat abilities or magic spells. He does own a small handgun and knows how to use it.
