This just means their path yet not yet been set in stone, and their character growth and path they take is entirely up to you. Characters can even stay as unclassed if they aren't meant to be fighters, and that is perfectly acceptable too.

Think of them as a type of 'civilian'.

Unclassed characters can use any range of weapon, but they cannot use any sort of magicked weapon. This also means most magical attacks wouldn't work for them either; an ordinary bow-and-arrow would burn up or melt or crack if fire or ice was applied to it, and a gun would explode if lightning was passed through it.

They can learn magic, but they're limited to the basic forms of any spell - Cure, Fire, Ice, etc. They would be unable to cast any spell that involved combining two (or more) elements together.
