the cracks in our memories can't change the bonds in our hearts
Welcome
to Simple and Clean, an au post-3D Kingdom Hearts roleplay.
After Xehanort removed the chains of memories linked not to people, but to objects and events - the keyblade, the Princesses of Heart, and Kingdom Hearts itself - the heroes found themselves living in a world where they are... ordinary. Where they are highschool and college students, parents or siblings, and living in a world not too far removed from our own.
Casting his spell cost Xehanort strength and time, but he's begun to move - and not everyone had their memories pulled. How will the worlds react to the return of the darkness when the light doesn't know to stand against it?
Events
Xehanort's awakening is at hand, and with it has come the beginning of the destruction of his spell.
Updates
10/08/17 First major site event has begun! Xehanort has awoken and he's hellbent on ensuring his plans will not be interfered with. A halloween writing contest has started as well, so be sure to check them both out.

Zola sighed.
"You always were so smart and observant." said Zola.
He paused. If he told Riku the truth he wouldn't likely believe him but he supposed it'd be worth a try.
"If I told you the truth you wouldn't believe me." said Zola.
He chuckled.
"But I'm been known to take a few risks. You were right about one thing. I am Roxas but a copy of him created on a computer. I was brought to life with memories of adventures that he, Sora, you, Kairi and so many others went on. Being data I'm able to store more memory than normal humans could." said Zola.
He smiled holding out his hands as Oathkeeper appeared in his left hand and the Oblivion appears in his right hand. He tosses oblivion towards Riku just like his counterpart had done in the world that never was.
"Do you recognize this? It's a Keyblade. Only Terra, Aqua, Ven, Roxas, Xion, Sora, you and I have been able to summon and wield them. Although you lent one to Kairi once." said Zola.
Zola smile faded as he glanced around Shibuya and then back at Riku.
"None of this is real you know. Twilight Town, Destiny Islands, Shibuya and Radiant Garden used to be four separate worlds. Xenahort was more powerful than we thought. And combined them somehow." said Zola.
His grin returned.
"You guys are legends. All of you have all fought to protect our worlds. And then you were cursed to forget. It's my job to get you all to remember before the monsters and their masters come back to finish the job." said Zola.
He smirked.
"But I'm hoping even with your memories gone that your body will remember. I know you used to fight duels with at least Sora, Waaka, Tidus and Selphie on Destiny Islands. Of course, these are a lot cooler than toy swords." said Zola.
Zola knew this was a lot to take in and then continued.
"You probably think I'm crazy but part of you's wondering if this is true. After all, you used to think about other worlds out there. You, Kairi and Sora built a raft to go see what's out there once. Although I'm guessing here you either never chose to build it or it was destroyed somehow. At least you remember it happening that way." said Zola.
He shrugged.
"I have a purpose besides storing information now. To help you regain your memories and save the day. I'll finally be apart of the story instead of just reading about it. But I know some of you are stubborn and Xenahort is strong. It took me two years just to find you guys. I'll find a way to restore your memories no matter how long it takes." said Zola.
Summoning forth not just one, but two keyblades -- and then handing one off to one of the keyblade bearers still suffering from memory loss -- may not have been the smartest course of action. It was like drops of blood in shark infested water; even though they couldn't be seen (yet) and even though they were still lurking in their namesake, the mere presence of a keyblade was enough to cause the shadows to begin to stir.
Keyblade... keyblade...
There was hunger gleaming in the yellow gaze as one of the small, ant-esq monsters began to pull itself out from the ground behind Riku.

Riku’s victory felt hollow. Yes, he was right, but he honestly wished he hadn’t been. Knowing that he had been correct in figuring out that this was a copy of Roxas, that he was connected to Roxas, that something was going on here just made him feel… wrong. Uneasy, and almost sick to his stomach. Whatever was happening and whatever he was being told was something that he wasn’t supposed to know. After all, if he was then he would have… he…
There was a shimmer in the air as the figure brought forth two objects. Weapons. Swords? No, but Riku knew he wasn’t really wrong to think that. Instead of a bladed end there were teeth, almost as if it had been meant to be a key, which was absolutely absurd. What would you do with a key that size?
Nothing good.
He caught the one tossed towards him with strangely practiced ease as he twisted it about in his hand, staring at it curiously. It was made of black ornate metal and just holding it felt like there was a heavy weight pulling in his chest. It felt so familiar, like he had done this before, like it was a part of him, but that-- that just wasn’t true. He would have remembered seeing something like this. It wouldn’t have just vanished from his memories.
Not unless what he’s saying is true-
“So… I was… some sort of hero? Sora… and Xion was too?” Riku couldn’t help the proud grin that began to crack his features at that thought. “My little sis a big damn hero.” A fact that he was more enthralled with than even the idea of himself being something of a legend.
The smile vanished, replaced by a flash of hurt as sudden pain lanced through the back of his leg. Riku twisted about quickly to see a strange black creature swiping at him again, red staining the tips of its claws from where it had gouged him once before.

Zola grinned seeing Roxas practice with it like it was second nature to him.
"See. It feels familiar to you even if you can't remember holding it yet. I knew summoning it would help." said Zola.
He nodded.
"Yes. You guys were all heroes." said Zola.
He was surprised Riku had a sister here. She was one of the people here he didn't have much data on initially but after arriving here he seemed to get data on people he hadn't before like Xion, Ven, Aqua and Terra. People he'd never met. It confused him at first but he was able to adjust.
When Riku seemed to be in pain he saw the Heartless behind him. Roxas lunged forward slashing at it with the Oathkeeper destroying it. He then turned to Riku with a frown on his face.
"I try to help and I just get you hurt. They haven't shown up for two years. I thought I had more time. I'm sorry." said Zola.
He rushed forward cutting a piece off from his white undershirt and offering it to Riku to bandage himself.
"They're not after you right now. Just me. You get to safety. If I don't make it you promise to not forget. It'll be up to you to remember and get sora, Xion and the others too. These Heartless are called Shadows. They are the weakest forms. There are stronger enemies out there too that will be hunting for me. As long as you don't summon the Keyblade all of you will have more time. It was an honor to get to meet you. I hope we get to meet again." said Zola.
He then rushed at group of Shadow Heartless nearby hoping to draw them away from Riku.
"Use the keyblade if you need to get away. I can summon it back to me later. Just go. You may be your friends last hope." said Zola.
(ooc: feel free to help. zola's just trying to be a hero but might impress riku enough that this isn't a joke and he's willing to give himself up to save riku. riku's not one to abandon someone. and be fun as the battle would mirror riku vs. roxas at the end of days. And if stronger heartless like Darkside or something eventually shows up raising the stakes that'd be fun too. xD)

A brilliant flash of light, green and white, and the source of the blood wound close up. Something in the back of his mind could remember that and it felt like it was on the tip of his tongue, but that was ridiculous, wasn't it? You couldn't just use light to magic away wounds and injuries. You couldn't just wish away hurt.
The cloth was used as a makeshift bandage as Riku let out a low hiss. The cut hadn't been deep but it was enough to stain his jeans and the back of his sneakers, likely ruining them. Not like I really cared much about them. The thought was coupled with a strange urge to laugh that was swallowed up when he looked over at Roxas. At Zola? The question of just what he was supposed to be calling him was something else that was dancing about his thoughts, but it felt inconsequential compared to everything else that was happening at the moment.
"If I don't make it you promise to not forget."
"It was an honor to get to meet you."
"Wha-" The statement was aborted as the blond abruptly bolted off, heading towards an area that seemed to be started to crawl with more of those strange shadow creatures. Why... Riku took one step forward, brow furrowed in confusion. That was... idiotic, wasn't it? Those things might have been small but they were clearly dangerous. Too many of them and they could drag you down and tear you apart. Why would you willingly go running towards them?
You may be your friends' last hope.
Pale lips pressed down as Riku looked down at the strange weapon in his hands. Hope, him? Hardly. It felt like the only real constant in his life was the fact that all he did was let people down. And yet here was this stranger who, for reasons god only knew, thought the world of him...
He wasn't quite sure what started moving first, his thoughts or his legs, but one moment he was standing still -- and the next Riku was chasing after Roxas, keyblade still in hand.
[ WORDS ] [ NOTES ] Well now things are gonna get crazy [ TAG ] Data Roxas/Zola
Riku hadn't summoned a keyblade but he had held on, which certainly made him a target. Data Roxas' had a noble goal with his intention of serving as a distraction, but there was no way for him to fully keep the heartless away from their true desire-- the heart of a clueless keyblade master.
The small creatures easily melted into the ground to slid beneath him, passing beneath Roxas before popping up behind him. It was an attack he was likely expecting, and when he would turn to attack he would be greeted with-- nothing. The shadows there had vanished before jumping on his back to try to slam Roxas onto the ground.

Zola grinned as he slashed at the Heartless. This was his first real fight. And he seemed to be doing good. And then he froze seeing them get around him heading for Riku.
"No! Riku!" said Zola.
He tried to run forward but was unprepared for the attack as he was knocked to the ground on his chest. The Heartless were on him now. He had to fight back. He kicked and punched at them swinging his keyblade at them.
"Maybe I'm not real. I'm more of a nobody than the Actual nobodies. But I won't fail. I have a duty to the worlds and their champions. Even if it costs me everything. I won't let them down. I can't let Riku down." said Zola.
As he spoke his keyblade seem to shine with light magic blasting a few of them away from him as he staggered to his feet. Zola's faith in himself and in Riku was strong. Riku was the first person to make him feel anything beyond the mission. Maybe it was irrational but part of him feared if Riku was killed he might not feel anything anymore. Surely it had to be something about Riku. But he was still in amazement at the display of light magic.
"How did I do that? I don't remember any data on doing that." said Zola.
He shrugged off his confusion and stumbled towards Riku knowing any injuries they both would have would need proper attention. It wasn't like they'd find someone with magic around here. At least someone that could use it.

He ran to the other's side, sliding to a crouched stop in order to help support him. The weapon he had been handed -- Oblivion -- vanished in a gleam of sparkling light. It was... for the best, if he was being honest with himself. It might have felt familiar, but that weapon didn't belong to him. It wasn't something he should have been trying to use.
"I have no idea what you're talking about but I'm pretty sure running head first into the pile of moving shadows is not a smart idea." The words were hissed out from under Riku's breath as he tried to gently shove push Roxas along with him.
Things were starting to click into place, and he found himself nudging sharply at the other's side. "Get rid of your weapon!" It was the only thing they had to use to fight against the monsters, sure, but it-- it was pretty obvious the keyblade was the beacon that was drawing the heartless to their location.
It wasn't like they would be completely defenseless. Well, not if they managed to get back to his apartment. Riku wasn't exactly unarmed, though his choice of weaponry was more along the lines of something practical and not an unwieldy metal key. Still, he had a feeling they would have a fairly decent chance of being able to escape if they just got rid of the equivalent of a bright light that Roxas was holding up for the small shadows to flock to. He just... knew it, somehow.

Zola chuckled.
"Perhaps but people do crazy things to protect the ones they care for. I'm just a living bits of ones and zeros but just talking with you before they showed up I never thought could happen to me. I wasn't programmed with emotions and I've been happy, embarrassed, sad, terrified and more. Terrified I'll fail and scared you could get hurt again. Or worse. It's my job to restore everyone's memories and protect you." said Zola.
He paused as Riku got him free and were pushing him around.
"But it's one of the few things that destroy them. We leave and they'll just attack ot her people. They want your heart Riku so they can create your Heartless and Nobody. A heartless is what captured hearts turn into and their bodies are empty shells that turn into Nobodies." said Zola.
He sighed realizing both were hurt and they wouldn't be able to fight much. He made Oathkeeper vanish from his hand as he turned to Riku.
"Maybe we should split up if we have to and find each other later." said Zola.
He made his way away from the creatures with Riku hoping they could get away fast enough.
Allowing Oathkeeper to vanish was an act that would just be too little, too late now. Shadows were one thing, and they were something that the two would have been able to (eventually) outright and escape. But the creature that pulled itself up from the ground before them, the shifting and writhing form of darkness with gleaming yellow eyes and claws that were a good half a foot long...
The neoshadow swayed on its feet for a moment before lunging at them. Even if Roxas or Riku were to be able to summon forth their keyblade, their weakened state wouldn't be much of a match for the strength of the heartless. It would be able to easily swat them both aside, scattering them away from each other so that it could turn to pick them apart one by one.

They were going to get away and this entire nightmare was going to come to a (dissatisfying) end. Riku would limp home to his apartment to metaphorically lick his wounds and watch over Xion while he thought about what he had learned from the digital version of Roxas. Sleep was something that would not come easily tonight or... for a while, but he would happily take the time to reflect.
Those plans were aborted when a much, much larger version of the shadows rose from the ground. This one seemed to be as tall as himself and, before he could even start to try to do anything, it jumped forward quickly, spinning as it slammed into the two of them. An aborted noise of pain esaped Riku as his back slammed onto the ground and as his body bounced, causing him to twist and roll onto this side before coming to a halt.
His arms had scrapped along the ground and he could feel heat and blood beginning to pool along the open wounds as he gasped and started to push himself up. Riku twisted about, collapsing back onto his tailbone -- and stared, body feeling frozen, as the sight of the gangly monster starting to stalk over towards him.
Sneakers pressed against the ground as he pushed himself back, and one hand groped out uselessly for something that just wasn't there - a weapon that he just didn't have now. A sense of numb was beginning to sink in as well, but a sharp pinch from the claws of a heartless dragged Riku's thoughts back to the present.

Zola ran alongside Riku but neo shadows appeared surrounding them and blocking their path.
"Damn it. It's too late. They're being drawn here. They're after your heart." said Zola.
He frowned realizing it didn't matter. They had to fight. And in flashes of light Oathkeeper and Oblivion appeared in his hands once more. And he charged at the Neoshadow slashing at it.
"We can't run from these things. They'll just keep hunting us down. Or worse go after someone else who will be no match for them. We have to take them out." said Zola.
He tossed the Oblivion to Riku again ready to summon it back if he missed or if Riku couldn't fight. If he was too hurt Zola would fight. Being made of data the pain hurt but he found he could ignore it easier. Perhaps he could even repair his injuries in time by replacing the data. But that would take time and he didn't have that right now.

My heart---
One hand reached up to press over his chest at that statement. Riku couldn’t say he really understood what Roxas meant by that, but he knew enough to know he didn’t mean it literally. Figuratively… His heart. Something inside of him, that was what those things wanted. They wanted it. The keyblade might have been the spark to get their attention, but Riku was the reason they were still there.
His own the actions felt sluggish and delayed, but his gaze lifted over to meet Roxas’. “Roxas-” A beat as he felt something deep inside of him beginning to break, bubbling over in his chest.
Oblivion was in his right hand, Oathkeeper was in Roxas’ left. He shifted closer to hook his left arm through Roxas’ right before twisting to the side, swinging the keyblade in an arch with the assumption (and hope) that Roxas would do the same behind him. As he did, vivid dark energy danced around the weapon, black violent exploding out to eat away at the shadows that had crept to close.
Darkness. His darkness.
This-- felt right and wrong all at once. Not right Roxas, but with someone close to Roxas. They had been like this, had--
YOU AREN’T SUPPOSED TO REMEMBER, RIKU.
A violent, knee-quaking thought that caused his grip on the keyblade to falter entirely.
[ WORDS ] [ NOTES ] Well now things are gonna get crazy [ TAG ] @npc2
Devouring Riku’s heart was forbidden, but how could they resist? Surely they would be forgiven this act in favor of knowing that they had gotten rid of the unwanted data program. The loss of one of the Bearers of Light could only further His plans as well. This one was Insignificant, no matter what He said and the orders He had given, and his heart -- his delicious, darkness-soaked heart -- would be theirs--
-- was one of the last thoughts that ran through the neoshadow’s head as it drew one clawed hand back, readied to swipe and tear the silver-haired male’s chest open. Instead, ribbons of darkness tore through its own body, eviscerating it and causing it to vanish in a twisting puff of smoke.

Zola kept fighting only to realize Riku seemed hurt. Was there another enemy here? He wasn't aware the Heartless could do anything. Then he froze rushing to Riku slashing at other Heartless in his way.
"RIKU!" shouted Zola.
He kept running.
"Don't let it win. You battled the darkness and overcame it. You wielded the darkness as a power while being a good. Only Roxas, Terra, and I have wielded darkness in our own ways. But you had style. Everyone's counting on you. Your sister Xion. Your friends Sora and Kairi. Namine, Roxas, Aqua, Terra, Ven, Selphie, Waaka, Lea, Tidus, Leon, Yuffie, Aerith, Cid, Cloud, Ven, Aqua, and so many others. They need you. I need you. I thought I could do this alone but even Sora and Roxas had friends by his side to fight." said Zola.
He turned to Riku and pulled him into a hug.
"Don't let them take it away from you again. You were started to remember. It wasn't all good. There were bad times but you have to take the good with the bad. Don't give up. You never gave up on Kairi lost her heart or Sora even when he lost his memories the first time. You never gave up on them and they never gave up on you. You did everything you could to help them and you almost lost yourself to darkness to do it. Because that's the kind of person you are. I wish I had a friend like you." said Zola.
He wasn't aware he said the last part out loud but he was hoping he was reaching Riku.
