to Simple and Clean, an au post-3D Kingdom Hearts roleplay.
After Xehanort removed the chains of memories linked not to people, but to objects and events - the keyblade, the Princesses of Heart, and Kingdom Hearts itself - the heroes found themselves living in a world where they are... ordinary. Where they are highschool and college students, parents or siblings, and living in a world not too far removed from our own.
Casting his spell cost Xehanort strength and time, but he's begun to move - and not everyone had their memories pulled. How will the worlds react to the return of the darkness when the light doesn't know to stand against it?

10/08/17 First major site event has begun! Xehanort has awoken and he's hellbent on ensuring his plans will not be interfered with. A halloween writing contest has started as well, so be sure to check them both out.

Leon grinned as he arrived at the beach. It was Thursday morning. He'd taken the day off and he was now shirtless dressed only in a pair of black swimming trunks. He put a bag with his stuff down pulling out some sunscreen as he put it on his chest, back and legs. He had invited Sora but he wasn't sure if he would come. And last he heard from Roxas he was working. He knew he needed to get to know more people in town especially some closer to his age. He chuckled focusing on fun as he headed to the water and began swimming.

It was pure coincidence that the two happened to be there at the same time. Terra didn't have classes on thursday and, to quote the brunet, 'You've been holing yourself up too much Ventus'. The blond couldn't really disagree with the statement, though it wasn't for lack of wanting to. Spending time with Aqua and Terra was fine! But other people... was still hard.
Except for him. The mystery red head who Ventus couldn't quite get out of his thoughts. But--
But right now was time for him to get sun and attempt to socialize and 'you'll have fun!'. Famous last words and all of that. Ventus had just nodded before going along with Terra's plans, knowing that the other was busy enough and that he was just grateful he had decided to take some time out to spend with Ventus. Even if that time was being spent sitting awkwardly on a beach towel, furtively looking around and hoping no one would really bother them. The 'oh is this your son! You two are so cute!' comments got old after awhile.
Or you could just try to talk to people, Ven... Aqua and Terra would probably be a lot happier if you did. A thought coupled with a sigh.

Leon finished his swimming for awhile as he headed back onto shore. He grabbed his sunscreen placing it on his body not wanting to sunburn as he spotted Roxas. Or who he thought was Roxas. He grinned waving to him.
"And how's my favorite employee doing? Good to see you again Roxas. who's your friend?" said Leon.
He walked up to "Roxas" and the other man not aware he was talking to Roxas's twin and the guy probably had no idea who he was. He paused holding out his hand to the man.
"Hello. I'm Squall Leonhart. But everyone calls me Leon. I run the Starlight Diner in town. We're currently having a special on sea salt ice cream if you're interested." said Leon.

He froze, breath caught in his throat at the sudden sound of a stranger's voice. Wh. What? Favorite employee? Blue eyes had gone wide as Ventus found himself staring down at the ground, though the mention of a 'friend' had him glancing over to where Terra had walked off to. This was absolutely the worst time for him to be abandoned-!
Wait. Roxas?
Hesitantly Ventus looked up, biting down on the corner of his lower lip as he looked up at the other. "U-um... I'm not Roxas..." Words said as he shrugged his shoulders. "He's my twin, though... I-i'm Ventus...?"
The introduction of himself came out as more of a question than a statement, making the blond's hesitance fairly clear.

Leon paused as he said he wasn't Roxas. That was his twin.
"Twins? Really?" asked Leon.
Seeing Ventus look genuinely concerned he sighed.
"You really don't know who I am? Do you? I'm just some stranger who walked up to you. I'm sorry. I hope I didn't upset you." said Leon.
He smiled at him.
"Roxas started working at my diner Starlight Cafe. I run the place. He's become one of my best employees. Although sometimes I think he just joined for the sea salt ice cream." said Leon.

Roxas... had a job? Ventus blinked a little a that, feeling oddly hollow inside. He could guess that this had been a recent development but there hadn't been any phonecalls, or texts, or visits to tell him that hey! I got a new job! isn't that great? Instead the other was just moving forward with his life rather happily without having Ventus involved.
"It's okay." Soft voice as Ventus started to get to his feet. "I don't... Roxas probably didn't mention me. We don't... really talk much anymore."
Whose fault was that? His fault. Ven's fault. He had ruined everything--
The blond forced a smile as he looked up at the older male. "One of your best employees? That's... great to hear. I'm glad he found something that he's happy doing."

Hardly the first time that Ventus had been asked that question. Hardly going to be the last time he would be asked that, though it had been a bit since someone had actually voiced the concern to him. He had gotten better and had managed to consistantly find his voice, but the topic of his brother seemed to swallow it back up. All the courage and self confidence he had managed to cobble together for himself was oh-so-easily chipped away in the face of Roxas, and the realization of just how much of a disappointment it must have been to have him, Ventus, as a twin.
"I-- I talk." The blond swallowed hard at that before forcing a tight smile. "Sorry... I guess I'm just... quiet."
Hardly. Only, he was? And yet, ask Aqua or Terra and they would say he never shut up. So. A lie.
The offer to work where his brother did had Ventus' eyes widening before he shook his head. "I-! Appreciate the offer but I-- I don't think my brother would be happy if I took you up on it." It seemed like something that would get messy very, very quickly. Maybe Roxas would be happy but it was just as likely -- more likely, really -- that his brother would wind up jealousy and mad that Ventus was working at the same place he was.
A beat, and a blink. "Why would you want to go swimming with me?" Genuine confusion colored his tone as Ventus looked up at the other, brow knitting together tightly.

Leon looked at him confused.
"Sorry guess you misunderstood you me. You said you and your brother don't talk. I was just surprised by that. The only family I really have is my son and my best friend who's like a little sister to me. I couldn't imagine my life without them. Whatever's going on with you and your brother is your business. I'm not going to pry. But you can't wait forever to fix it either. If you want to that is." said Leon.

"I think Roxas is happy with the way things are." A slight shrug and an awkward smile. That... was a lie. Ventus could tell that Roxas was unhappy, so incredibly unhappy, but butting into his personal life would only make it worse. He wanted things-- he wanted his own life, didn't he? He didn't want to just be the shadow of Ventus (even though, honestly, Ventus was the one who acted like the shadow of Roxas).
Bad enough that Ventus had already had an accidental run in with Roxas' best friend...
"Besides, if he wants a relationship with a brother, he always has Sora." Ventus let out an awkward forced laugh at that. "I'm not his only option."
God, how self-deprecating could he be? But it was true! It wasn't like Sora had ever done anything to completely ruin Roxas' home life, not like Ventus had done. Roxas... was lucky to have a brother like him.
He gave a slight shake of his head as his gaze lowered. "I'm sorry sir. I... think it'd be best if I just found my friend and left."

Leon shook his head.
"If you two aren't talking you don't really know what the other's feeling. If I had family out there I'd try to make it right. You never when it could be too late. Don't give up on him. I'm sure he hasn't given up on you. It may take time but I'm sure you guys can work things out." said Leon, trying to sound hopeful.
He raised an eyebrow as he mentioned Sora.
"Wait Sora.. You guys are my son's brothers?" asked Leon.
He paused as he said he should go.
"Please don't go. You're my son's family. And to me that makes you my family. At least to me. And I don't turn my back on family." said Leon.
He paused sitting down resting on his knees as he looked at Ven before pulling the teen into a quick hug.
"You can think of me as a big brother or uncle or just a friend if you like." said Leon.
He let go not wanting to make things too awkward.
"I'm sorry about your mom. She left you, Cloud, Roxas and Sora leaving Cloud and me to pick up the pieces. Part of me wishes I'd reached out sooner to your side of the family so the three of you could have grown up together as brothers. But you still have a chance to get to know both of your brothers and me if you want. And if you want to know me. But if it's too much for you I'll still clear. If you blame me for what happened for any reason don't take it out on Sora. And for what it's worth I didn't know your mother was married or had a family when we met. I regret it happening the way it did but I can't regret that it happened or I wouldn't have Sora." said Leon.

He took a step back-- or would have, had Squall not suddenly stepped closer to crouch down and pull him into a tight hug. This man was, he was Sora's father? There was no relationship between them, nothing that actually connected his half-brother's father to him, but it felt like such a surreal coincidence and happenstance event. To run into him, of all people.
"I..."
Ventus slowly lifted his own hands, unsure whether he was going to hug the man or try to push him away. The decision was made for him when Squall (seemingly reluctantly, so there was that at least) pulled away and straightened. As the other spoke, the blond found himself worrying his lower lip as his gaze was focused firmly on the sandy ground. His heart felt like it was doing its best to crawl its way out of his chest, but the rest of him was beginning to feel numb. Hands and feet felt cold and his vision seemed to-- not quite go dark, but he was slowly slipping away from being here. It was just more like he was... watching the scene of Squall talking to Ventus.
"Blame... Sora?" That had Ventus blinking, and that had him looking up to the other male. "I... I don't blame him. I don't... blame you either. I... it's my fault... I'm... the one that freaked out..."
He had to swallow hard at that as one shoulder shrugged, the gestured paired with a forced, thin smile.
"If I hadn't... I mean. I... I don't... you guys didn't do anything."

Leon looked at him surprised.
"But if I hadn't met Aerith that day your family would probably still be together. Part of me's blamed myself. That's probably why I talked myself into not searching for you. .Guilt. I didn't think I could face any of you. I know I didn't know before it happened but the time I did it was too late." said Leon.
He paused as Ventus said he freaked out.
"That's understandable. Your mom cheated on your dad. Your parents split up and you found out you had a half brother. Most kids would freak out a little." said Leon.
Leon smiled at him.
"It's not your fault kid. I know it's not really mine even though I still blame myself. If I could do things over again I don't know if I could. My parents died when I was really young. All I had was my best friend Yuffie who was like a sister to me and Sora. They're all the family I really had. But I guess I have more now. You, Roxas, Cloud, Sora, Yuffie, and me." said Leon.

The desire to argue was there, sitting on the tip of his tongue. It turned sour quickly and melted down into a heavy miasma that weighed on his throat and chest, choking back his words and forcing him to just swallow and nod.
Understandable. Only... Ventus didn't believe that. Most kids... maybe they would be upset. Maybe they would act out, like how Roxas acted out. That, that made sense to him. That seemed reasonable. But losing his voice and shutting down to the point of forcing social services to intervene, to where he needed to be sent away because it was deemed that there was no other way for him to get better.
That wasn't... just being upset. That was breaking down and ruining his family, and all it really took was a few minutes with Roxas to tell that he held this against him and would always hold it against him.
"I... I don't think... I-i'd want you to... do anything different..." Ventus could feel a painful constricting in his chest but he ignored it as he struggled to do what he was supposed to be able to do best: to just ignore his own discomfort and pretend everything was okay. He had... this was what he had learned with Eraqus and Aqua and Terra, even if Aqua and Terra would be appalled to hear him word it that way. "If you did th-then... then Sora wouldn't exist."
A shrug, and huh.
Strange way to word it. Exist versus, wouldn't be alive.

Leon smiled at him.
"Things worked out the way they did. You lost your mother and your family got a little broken. But it can be fixed. I always believe that things happen to us but we always have the strength to get past the hard times if we look for it. Or rely on others to help pull us up. I guess I could have been your stepfather if things had gone differently. But probably for the best, that didn't happen." said Leon.
He nodded.
"And I'm grateful my son exists. And that the three of you are brothers. He had friends growing up but being an only child I could tell was lonely for him at times. And now the three of you have each other. None of you has to feel alone anymore. And our family has just gotten a little bigger." said Leon.
He grinned.
"Do you really feel like you have to go? I would love to get to know you better. Or if you don't want to talk we can just goof around and swim. Maybe I'll get lucky and beat you a couple times." said Leon.
He hoped he was doing the right things. He wasn't always good at making Sora happy but he did his best. Yuffie was the aunt Sora needed and could help him a lot more then he could. Since he didn't have his mom in his life.
